Colony Observations
A colony of feral cats in an apartment
complex near Orlando Florida was fed Feralstat once a week in wet cat food
beginning late spring of 2010 and ending fall of 2011. The caretaker had
been approached several times with an offer to help TNR, but he was
unresponsive.
The complex was bordered by a vacant golf
course, a neighborhood of single family homes, and several other apartment
communities.
Although over time we were able to get within
several feet of the cats, it wasn't close enough contact
to observe something like mammary swelling if that was present. The cats looked
to be in good health, and were seen playing with each other. No births or pregnancies
were observed, but
two kittens did appear in the summer of 2011 which we believe were
offspring of other cats in the vicinity. It did seem that some of the cats who were "teenagers" when we began feeding them
seemed to remain that size over the year.
In the fall of 2011 a mother bear made
contact with a person walking her dog in the complex so Florida Fish & Wildlife
were called. Traps were set for the bear and officers began patrolling the area.
At that point we had to suspend feeding of the cats.
